[0:52] Angie: Hey, guys. Welcome to another episode of Virgins Don't Take Pregnancy Tests: The Podcast with Angie and Dave. Um, today we're gonna have a little bit of a special topic and a special mocktail. Um, since it's getting-
[1:07] Dave: Yeah, four
[1:07] Angie: we have four mocktails to try. Um, since it's kinda October, uh, sober October, it's also well into right in the middle of football season, um, I started kinda just thinking about like some of the things that are challenging for people that are sober. And so one of the things I had really been thinking about that the last few years h- as I've been going to more like college football games, you know, I go to ECU to visit the girls, uh, we go to tailgates with the sororities, there's just an awful lot of drinking tied to the game of football. And the more I just started like looking at it, it's like the entire, you know, it's, it's from NFL, like the way that they approach it-
[1:52] Dave: It, it's like you go to a party and a football game breaks out
[1:54] Angie: well, a tailgate, yeah, is-
[1:56] Dave: Yeah
[1:56] Angie: basically like a party where there, yeah, a football game breaks out.
[1:59] Dave: Mm-hmm.
[2:00] Angie: And so like what do you do? Like is that hard for you? And like maybe you could talk to us about like at first like just the general like are you a football fan or a drinker with like a favorite team? I know that you're a huge Eagles fan. But, but-
[2:17] Dave: Okay
[2:17] Angie: answer that for me, but also like what was the role of alcohol previously in your life with regards to football and sports and things like that?
[2:27] Dave: So yeah, I mean, I've always been an Eagles fan. Um, so obviously I was a fan of the Eagles and football before I started drinking.
[2:37] Angie: Right.
[2:38] Dave: Um, but you are correct when it is, I mean, the tailgating before a football game, any sporting event, any event really, uh, it is very centered around drinking, cooking, uh, doing shots, um, you know, they have beer funnels now. Some people bring fucking ice luges and shit. I mean, they really go all out now for tail- tailgates. Um, so yeah, then it would just turn into a party. Um, it wasn't... See, I never needed a reason to drink, right? A lot of people, they might not drink a lot, so they figure, "Well, I'm going to a football game. This is a special occasion. I'm gonna fucking have a great time-
[3:18] Angie: Right
[3:18] Dave: and get hammered." I never needed a reason, right? So-
[3:22] Angie: Right
[3:23] Dave: I would-
[3:23] Angie: So it was just another day to you, but in the scheme of it, it's-
[3:26] Dave: Yeah
[3:26] Angie: it still is something that is steeped with alcohol rituals-
[3:31] Dave: Right
[3:31] Angie: and the culture.
[3:31] Dave: 'Cause it might not be something that you do very often and, and so you get excited for it-
[3:36] Angie: Yeah
[3:36] Dave: and you, uh, you turn it into a party and that's great. You know, it, it, it would be weird for me, and I'll experience this this weekend going to a tailgate and not drinking, um, because we are, we are going to a tailgate this weekend, uh, Angie and I. She's been to many, um, since she has, uh, stopped drinking, but I haven't been to one. I really haven't been anywhere or done anything. Um, so it's gonna be interesting for me, and we were just talking about it before we started that, um, Angie was saying in her experience that, uh, it can seem like a very long time, a long drawn-out, um-
[4:16] Angie: Day
[4:16] Dave: day when you're, when you're not drinking and you're just kinda sitting around and everyone else is drinking and having a good time. And I imagine for me, I'm gonna wanna have a good time. I will, I will bring non-alcohol beers. Um, funny story. My, uh, my sister watched the last episode and I think-
[4:31] Angie: Yeah
[4:31] Dave: I told you this.
[4:32] Angie: Yeah.
[4:32] Dave: And she's, her biggest takeaway from that episode was what the hell was Real Coke doing there? So I said, "I don't know." I said, "Kevin and I-"
[4:40] Angie: It's fake.
[4:40] Dave: I said, "We were on the same page. We didn't know what the hell we're doing." And, uh, but she said it looked like we really enjoyed the ru- she said, she told me, "Br- bring the fake rum, leave the Real Coke." So, uh, I don't know, Kevin, if that bottle's even still around.
[4:54] Kevin: Oh, yeah, it's still here.
[4:54] Dave: I'll, I'll take, uh, I'll take that with me to my-
[4:56] Angie: Oh my God. That's so funny
[4:57] Dave: um, give it to her. I'm not sure what she'll do with it, but, uh, so I'm looking forward to it. Um-
[5:04] Angie: Are you nervous?
[5:04] Dave: I'm very nervous. I'm not nervous about drinking. I know I'm not gonna drink. Um, I'm just nervous to... 'Cause also this'll be, um... You know, I haven't really been around my family a lot. Um, and they've come down, come down to a couple of Sammy's baseball games and her graduation and stuff like that. Um, I haven't seen my sister, um, since, well, I was telling you, uh, it was October 4th, 2025.
[5:30] Angie: So a year.
[5:31] Dave: Yeah.
[5:31] Angie: Yeah.
[5:31] Dave: I haven't seen her in a year.
[5:32] Angie: Long time. I haven't seen her in forever too.
[5:34] Dave: Yeah, so, uh, I'm look- I'm excited. I'm, I'm looking forward to seeing them. Um, I'm glad there is a backdrop of other people and other things going on and like, you know, we are there to support our nephews. They're playing against each other this weekend. My nephew plays for Montclair State. Both of our nephew, uh, plays for Salisbury. Um, so I'm looking forward to it. I'm not nervous about drinking. I'm just kinda nervous about like what it's gonna feel like 'cause I don't really know-
[6:03] Angie: It's-
[6:03] Dave: what to expect, and I imagine-
[6:04] Angie: It's unfamiliar
[6:05] Dave: it's gonna be very unfamiliar.
[6:07] Angie: It reminds me of the first time I went to a wedding that first year I got sober.
[6:11] Dave: Right.
[6:11] Angie: And I don't know i- if people can understand, but like the amount of worry, and I wasn't worried I was gonna drink.
[6:20] Dave: Yeah, that's not it at all.
[6:20] Angie: 'Cause it was the one place I knew I wouldn't drink-
[6:22] Dave: Right
[6:22] Angie: 'cause I was gonna be showing people for the first time that I was-
[6:25] Dave: Right
[6:25] Angie: sober at an event. I wasn't worried about-
[6:28] Dave: There's zero chance-
[6:28] Angie: Yeah
[6:28] Dave: alcohol enters my body this weekend
[6:29] Angie: it's, it's more just like the- It's hard to be one of the only people not drinking in a drinking environment. It's challenging
[6:39] Dave: Well, and I also think it'll be harder, at least for me it would be, because I was always like a dr- not drinking the most, but maybe drinking the most. Like, I was the-
[6:51] Angie: Drunkest
[6:52] Dave: the drunk. My, yeah, I was the drinker of the group.
[6:54] Angie: Right.
[6:54] Dave: Right? Like, everybody knew. If you get to a tailgate, like we used to do for NASCAR, we would get to NASCAR at 5:00, 5:30 in the morning, start drinking. Start drinking beer, start drinking bourbons. Um, you get drunk three times at, at a NASCAR race, uh, just tailgating. Um, so yeah, it's not about, uh, drinking. I'm not gonna drink obviously. Um, but it's, I don't know what it's gonna feel like, uh, internally. Um, I don't know if it, if, if I'll be nervous. I, I'm sure I'm gonna feel like everyone's looking at me, even though they're probably not. They could give a shit less.
[7:28] Angie: Here's the thing that I learned. It took me a while. Nobody gives a shit if I drink or not.
[7:33] Dave: Yeah. Yeah.
[7:33] Angie: Nobody cares what I drink.
[7:35] Dave: Yeah.
[7:35] Angie: And I used to think everyone was watching when I was drinking.
[7:39] Dave: Yeah.
[7:39] Angie: It's a weird...
[7:41] Dave: Yeah, so it'll be interesting. I'm looking forward to it, and I, I'm actually, I'm looking forward to getting the first one under my belt, right? Like, maybe this can be a, a path forward for me into doing things more often in the future.
[7:56] Angie: What my experience was, and what I think you might find is you're gonna be really pleasantly surprised at how much fun you have.
[8:03] Dave: Probably.
[8:04] Angie: And just like, "Oh, shit. Okay. Why was I worried about this?" Like-
[8:08] Dave: Right
[8:09] Angie: um, you're gonna... It, it's just new, right?
[8:14] Dave: Yeah.
[8:14] Angie: It's really that unfamiliarity of it. And then you add in family on top of it. It's kind of just like multiple triggers at once. That's kind of what-
[8:24] Dave: Yeah, and I think the only other thing I'm gonna be look, looking out for, and I, I mean, I don't know how long we're all gonna, like, be around each other or whatever at the tailgate. But I'm gonna probably be looking at is anyone else curbing their drinking because of me.
[8:40] Angie: Hmm.
[8:41] Dave: Um, and I don't know that I'll be able to spot that, but I wonder... It's like these are the things... Remember we, we were talking a long time ago-
[8:46] Angie: Mm-hmm
[8:46] Dave: about mental gymnastics?
[8:48] Angie: Mm-hmm.
[8:48] Dave: Like, these are the things that'll be going through my head. Like, is anyone thinking about me not drinking and they're trying to not to drink as much as they normally would? Um-
[8:55] Angie: Wow, you're really, yeah-
[8:56] Dave: I know
[8:57] Angie: thinking it through
[8:57] Dave: I'm in, I'm in it. I am in my head, for sure, 100%. Um-
[9:01] Angie: Okay, so what are you gonna do on Saturday? Like, one thing that I think would be really helpful is just always have your drink.
[9:07] Dave: Good. 100%.
[9:07] Angie: And I know we're gonna pack our own cooler and all that. Um, but if you have a drink in your hand, no one offers you one. That's the first step.
[9:14] Dave: I'm, I'm gonna make sure I always have a drink in my hand, and it may not even be a non-alcoholic beer.
[9:19] Angie: Well, no, water. Yeah. Yeah.
[9:20] Dave: I'm gonna bring some waters and stuff. Um, yeah, and I, I know I'm in my head. I know it's not gonna be that big of a deal, and I know probably an hour in, I will, like you said, I'll probably be like, "What the hell was I worried about?"
[9:31] Angie: Yeah.
[9:32] Dave: Yeah.
[9:32] Angie: And then you're gonna just have, like, complete confidence going into future social situations.
[9:37] Dave: And it will help 100% that you are going and that we're actually going together. I actually bought your ticket.
[9:42] Angie: It's, it's, it's real... Huh?
[9:44] Dave: I actually bought your ticket.
[9:45] Angie: Oh, yeah.
[9:46] Dave: So you're going.
[9:46] Angie: Thank you, by the way.
[9:46] Dave: You're going.
[9:47] Angie: First of all, I was never not going. He keeps saying like I'm going.
[9:50] Dave: She doesn't have a choice.
[9:51] Angie: But I am going. Our, it's not a-
[9:52] Dave: No, you're going.
[9:53] Angie: Um-
[9:53] Dave: But that's gonna make it a lot easier for me, I think.
[9:56] Angie: It is a lot easier to have a sober buddy.
[9:59] Dave: Mm-hmm.
[10:00] Angie: Even if it's, like, not to keep each other from drinking. It's more just like, "Oh, shit."
[10:04] Dave: There's always someone I can talk to.
[10:06] Angie: Right? Or, like, shit goes awry.
[10:09] Dave: Yeah. Yeah.
[10:10] Angie: Which happens.
[10:11] Dave: I might get in my head a lot and be like, "Angie, uh, fucking, I need to just be right next to you for a little bit." I don't know. See what happens.
[10:19] Angie: So I'm excited about Saturday.
[10:23] Dave: Good. You should be.
[10:24] Angie: Um, I do think, um, just I wanna kind of... When we start talking about football, I also was thinking about, like, kind of if you start thinking about, like, how alcohol is woven into just, like, the football culture. So, like, just think about, like, football Sundays.
[10:44] Dave: Mm-hmm.
[10:44] Angie: Um, what that entails, for example, getting ready for a Commanders game, uh, or going to the game. Like, what is that ritual? And you'll find that a lot of those things that people do before a game, those rituals involve alcohol, whether it's shots or the luge you mentioned, or isn't there something where, like, the Bills Mafia people dive on tables and shit?
[11:09] Dave: They jump, they jump on tables and stuff.
[11:09] Angie: Yeah.
[11:09] Dave: Yeah, that's ridiculous.
[11:11] Angie: So, like, but I mean, there's, that, that kind of stuff is encouraged.
[11:15] Dave: Yeah.
[11:15] Angie: And, um, I just think it's, like, the reason it became something that I noticed was because we were talking about that really dumb thing where that guy got fined for making a touchdown. His little celebration was-
[11:30] Dave: Oh, acting like he was drinking a beer?
[11:30] Angie: chugging a drink.
[11:31] Dave: Yeah.
[11:31] Angie: The juice guy, Juice guy, or whatever his name is.
[11:34] Dave: Mm-hmm.
[11:34] Angie: Um, I think he got fined, like, $30,000.
[11:37] Dave: Mm-hmm.
[11:37] Angie: Um, ridiculous. And so the one thing that kind of jumped out at me is, like, why was he getting fined for drinking a beer-
[11:45] Dave: Acting like he was drinking a beer
[11:46] Angie: when the entire stadium, anything you could possibly have a sponsor on is alcohol?
[11:53] Dave: I'm fairly certain the NFL has a pretty lucrative deal with Bud Light.
[11:57] Angie: And Bud Light, Bud Light-
[11:59] Dave: Right
[11:59] Angie: paid $250 million-
[12:02] Dave: Mm-hmm
[12:03] Angie: to be the sponsor of the NFL.
[12:05] Dave: Yeah.
[12:05] Angie: They did get screwed a little because at the end they ended up deciding, well, we're not gonna have just one sponsor now that there's NA Spirits and there's all this kind of stuff. So they just signed someone for, like, the liquor. I don't know who it was. but it just seems really hypocritical to me that they would even fine someone. Like, I just, I don't... It seems so stupid to me.
[12:27] Dave: It is stupid. Um, uh, I've seen football players do way worse than that, and nothing happened to them. Um- But like as far as like rituals go, uh, with watching football and drinking, it got to a point... So I told you that, for years I had, uh, thought about getting NFL Sunday Ticket.
[12:46] Angie: Yep.
[12:47] Dave: And I didn't do it because any time the Eagles weren't on TV, it was an excuse for me to go to the bar.
[12:53] Angie: Mm-hmm.
[12:54] Dave: Um, so I knew at least, you know, eight or nine times throughout the season I was gonna go to the bar.
[12:59] Angie: Brittany's.
[12:59] Dave: Um, right. And so it, uh-
[13:02] Angie: Shout out.
[13:03] Dave: So it got to the point where I would go a- and watch football, and I think they would just realize that every time the Eagles scored a touchdown I would do a shot.
[13:15] Angie: Mm-hmm.
[13:16] Dave: And then it got to the point where I didn't even have to ask for it. If the Eagles scored a touchdown, one of the bartenders, who I knew very well, I still talk to most of them, not most, a- some of them, uh, would just bring me a shot every time the Eagles, you know-
[13:28] Angie: Score
[13:28] Dave: got a touchdown.
[13:29] Angie: So that was your thing.
[13:30] Dave: Um, yeah. And it was great. Um, but yeah, I think, uh, it's that. I mean, there used to be years ago a group of us, um, 'cause a bunch of my friends, a lot of friends at my old work and everything, it was a ritual. Every Sunday we would all go to, uh, Mr. Days, the one in Arlington.
[13:51] Angie: Mm-hmm.
[13:51] Dave: Not the one I talked about last week in DC.
[13:53] Angie: Mm-hmm.
[13:53] Dave: We would go to Mr. Days, and it, there might be, we might have to, we might would, might would've had to reserve the whole, like long section of the bar.
[14:03] Angie: Mm-hmm.
[14:03] Dave: 'Cause there would be that many of us just coming and going throughout the day. And it was every Sunday, and it didn't matter if the Eagles were on TV. A lot of my friends are Patriots fans. It didn't matter. We just, every Sunday we just went. Um-
[14:16] Angie: You just made me think of, um, when I lived in Atlanta and there was a year that the Super Bowl was in Atlanta, and this was in my 20s, so a while ago.
[14:25] Dave: Yeah, I'm surprised you remember that.
[14:26] Angie: Yeah, thanks. But I remember like Julie, a whole bunch, all my friends came to Atlanta, and we weren't going to the game, but like we had to be at the bar at like 10:00 AM-
[14:37] Dave: Yeah
[14:37] Angie: that Sunday 'cause we wanted the front tables-
[14:41] Dave: Got to get your spot
[14:41] Angie: in front of the big massive screen.
[14:44] Dave: Yeah.
[14:45] Angie: We did not even make it to the game. We did not make it to the game. I'm telling you that we ended up leaving our table probably in the first quarter, and everyone went home because everyone was wasted. We didn't even like make it through the game, and which was so stupid.
[14:59] Dave: Yeah.
[15:00] Angie: But like that was the whole point of it too, like to get there at 10:00 to start drinking to be ready and prepped for a game at 6:30. That just sounds-
[15:09] Dave: I've, I've watched games, and I've been at NASCAR races where I don't remember who won the race.
[15:18] Angie: Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
[15:18] Dave: Or if I know the, who won the football game, I don't know what the score was.
[15:22] Angie: The score, for sure.
[15:23] Dave: Um, I mean, that happened a lot. I could probably tell you who, who won the football game. I couldn't tell you the score. But a lot of days I would wake, I wouldn't even know who won the race, and I know I watched the whole race.
[15:35] Angie: So like-
[15:35] Dave: That's crazy
[15:36] Angie: what is it, what is it like now for you on a Sunday?
[15:38] Dave: It's, it's a lot, it's relaxing.
[15:41] Angie: Like what's your thing, what's your go-to thing to do?
[15:43] Dave: Nothing.
[15:44] Angie: So just like-
[15:45] Dave: Nothing
[15:45] Angie: kinda get what you wanna eat and-
[15:47] Dave: Get what I wanna eat. Uh, just sit and watch and relax. Uh, hopefully, you know, Sammy's with me and asking questions. Cathy's gotten really into football this year.
[15:55] Angie: She has.
[15:56] Dave: Yeah. She's watching some football.
[15:57] Angie: Wow.
[15:57] Dave: We don't really have a choice.
[15:59] Angie: Yeah.
[15:59] Dave: Uh, 'cause like Sammy, the first thing she says most weekends is, "Can you put on SportsCenter? Who's playing today?"
[16:03] Angie: Well, she calls me every Monday to tell me the Commanders lost.
[16:06] Dave: Well, that usually is every Monday.
[16:08] Angie: That's what I mean. So.
[16:09] Dave: Um, so yeah, no, so she's into it. So yeah, we just, it's almost like a family thing now. We sit and, and watch games.
[16:16] Angie: Would you have like envisioned that before?
[16:18] Dave: No. I would be down in the basement-
[16:20] Angie: By yourself pretty much
[16:21] Dave: yeah, pounding bourbons. Yeah.
[16:22] Angie: Yeah.
[16:23] Dave: Yeah. So it, um, yeah, no, it's better now. It's way better now for sure.
[16:31] Angie: So what do you say we try our, um, mocktails and bring out our wings for a little break today?
[16:37] Dave: Oh, my God. You're tugging at my heartstrings. All right
[16:45] Angie: Okay. We are going to do our, um, mocktails today. We're obviously doing beer and wings is the theme for today with our football conversation. Uh, Dave has some homemade wings that we're gonna be breaking out during this as well. Um, so we're gonna taste test four different non-alcoholic beers, and we're gonna rank them and-
[17:06] Dave: Sure
[17:06] Angie: see if we like any of them and see which one we like best.
[17:09] Dave: Okay. I'm, I'm gonna preface with I will not dislike any of these. One, I, I've had them already, and I, I, as a fan of beer, I will not be able to say, "Ew, I don't like this."
[17:22] Angie: But will you be able to-
[17:23] Dave: I can-
[17:24] Angie: Is there one you'll like better maybe?
[17:25] Dave: I can, I can rank them for sure.
[17:27] Angie: All right.
[17:27] Dave: But there's none I won't like.
[17:28] Angie: Okay. Well, I don't really drink beer. I didn't drink beer, but, let's go with, uh, Budweiser first.
[17:35] Dave: Budweiser Zero.
[17:36] Angie: Pass one to Kev.
[17:37] Dave: And all of these have zero alcohol. None of them have the .05.
[17:41] Angie: The... Yeah.
[17:42] Dave: They're all 10.
[17:45] Angie: Just so you guys know, that's what we were talking about last week, the new thing. Uh, non-alcoholic, non-alcoholic beverages used to be able to say they were non-alcoholic even if they had up to half a percentage of-
[17:57] Dave: I don't even think it was half. I think it was .05.
[18:00] Angie: Oh, .05.
[18:00] Dave: I don't know what that is, like half of a half?
[18:02] Angie: Five... Yeah.
[18:02] Dave: Yeah.
[18:02] Angie: Okay. Very small percentage. Um-
[18:05] Dave: But these are zero.
[18:05] Angie: But now these are, like, zero-zero. All right. Budweiser Zero.
[18:10] Dave: Cheers.
[18:11] Angie: Oh, cheers. I almost forgot.
[18:12] Dave: Kevin.
[18:13] Angie: Kevin, cheers.
[18:14] Kevin: Oh, hell yeah.
[18:19] Angie: Okay.
[18:21] Dave: Oh, it's...
[18:21] Angie: This gives me-
[18:22] Dave: It's fake
[18:23] Angie: this gives me a memory of drinking flat beer.
[18:30] Dave: Like your, your feet are sticking to the floor-
[18:31] Angie: It's flat
[18:32] Dave: flat, at a frat house.
[18:32] Angie: That's how it tastes to me. What do you think?
[18:36] Dave: I think it's delicious.
[18:38] Angie: Like, you actually, you would drink it?
[18:40] Dave: I, I do.
[18:41] Angie: Oh, this is what you drink?
[18:42] Dave: Yeah, this is, this is my main joint.
[18:43] Angie: Oh, I didn't know.
[18:44] Dave: I can rank them right now for you if you want, but this is my main... That, that's, that's my go-to.
[18:51] Angie: So even though I'm not, like, a beer fan-
[18:53] Dave: Oh
[18:53] Angie: what I will say is, different than last week except for the rum, like, this is actually beer flavor. I mean-
[18:59] Dave: Yeah
[18:59] Angie: there's no... I wouldn't... Honestly, if I drink it when I was drinking-
[19:05] Dave: You would think beer
[19:05] Angie: I don't even know if you would know. You, you... I think I could probably drink a whole one and not know. Um, I think it's okay. What are we giving it out of a five?
[19:14] Dave: Uh, just because it's my favorite, I would give it a five.
[19:18] Angie: Oh, you're giving it a five. All right.
[19:20] Dave: Just 'cause it's my go-to.
[19:21] Angie: So I'm just gonna give it, like, a three.
[19:24] Dave: Which is funny, because when I was drinking and drinking beer, Budweiser was my zero. I hated it.
[19:30] Angie: Really?
[19:31] Dave: Think a sip gave me a headache. Hated Budweiser.
[19:34] Angie: All right. So we have, you're a fan of Budweiser. I'm a, it's okay. I, I'm giving it a three. Kevin, are you ranking it?
[19:41] Kevin: I mean, I don't like beer.
[19:44] Dave: As someone who doesn't like beer, what would you rank it?
[19:47] Angie: Well, like, doesn't it taste like beer?
[19:50] Kevin: Yes, but I, I assume-
[19:51] Dave: It tastes like that shit you hate
[19:52] Kevin: I assume they're all gonna taste just like this.
[19:55] Dave: They probably will to you.
[19:57] Kevin: So-
[19:57] Angie: All right
[19:57] Kevin: right now it's a zero. This is my zero.
[19:59] Angie: Okay. We're moving on to Heineken.
[20:03] Dave: Someone thought ahead to know that these weren't twist off.
[20:05] Angie: Actually, I wanna... I'm really impressed that you brought that. I wouldn't have remembered.
[20:09] Dave: And it is not always on my keychain. I literally put this on before I got here.
[20:13] Angie: I actually think this is gonna be my favorite, although I'm, I'm excited about Coors too. All right, so Heineken 0.
[20:22] Dave: Cheers.
[20:22] Angie: Cheers.
[20:23] Kevin: Cheers.
[20:29] Angie: This one tastes better.
[20:30] Kevin: It does. I felt-
[20:32] Angie: Yeah
[20:32] Dave: It tastes-
[20:34] Angie: This tastes like... I-
[20:35] Dave: This... No, I know what it is
[20:36] Angie: This re- No, no, this reminded me of a fraternity beer.
[20:39] Dave: No, I know. No.
[20:39] Angie: That's what came to my-
[20:40] Dave: I, I know what it is. You're not using the right words.
[20:42] Angie: What?
[20:43] Dave: This is American beer. This is what American tastes like.
[20:47] Angie: Ah.
[20:47] Dave: This is German beer-
[20:48] Angie: Yeah
[20:49] Dave: more beery. It's like, it's like, it's good-
[20:52] Angie: It's almost like an IPA a little
[20:54] Dave: but it does taste more like beer, which speaking of IPAs, anyone who thinks an IPA tastes good is out of their mind.
[20:59] Angie: I know, but that's what this re- and they have also non-alcoholic-
[21:01] Dave: No one likes IPAs
[21:02] Angie: they have non-alcoholic ones, 'cause I got it at a bar.
[21:04] Dave: They... Athletic makes them.
[21:05] Angie: Oh, that's who it was.
[21:06] Dave: Um, but anyone who says IPAs taste good is out of their mind. They're just trying to act cool or something, 'cause IPAs are disgusting.
[21:13] Angie: Yeah. I'm gonna give this one a five in terms of beer. I'm not a big beer fan, but, um, I think the taste of it is good. I would drink it. This, I don't even wanna drink a second. Uh, I don't know. What about you?
[21:26] Dave: What do you think, Kev?
[21:28] Kevin: Heineken tastes better than Budweiser, so I would give it-
[21:32] Dave: That, you're being cultural
[21:34] Kevin: I would give it... Out of five? A two.
[21:40] Angie: Ooh.
[21:41] Dave: All right.
[21:41] Angie: Um, I think I'm gonna have a wing.
[21:44] Kevin: Is it wings time?
[21:45] Dave: Let's, let's get some wings.
[21:46] Angie: Yeah. I just think we need a little palate cleanser before we get into two more beers.
[21:50] Dave: So I had these marinating for about three days.
[21:53] Angie: Oh my God. Uh-
[21:54] Dave: And-
[21:54] Angie: You mean because Kevin canceled on us
[21:56] Dave: well, 'cause, well, I was gonna make them either way, but I waited.
[22:00] Angie: Mm.
[22:01] Kevin: Oh.
[22:01] Dave: And, uh, these are air fryer.
[22:03] Angie: All right. Here, give him a napkin here.
[22:07] Kevin: Put it up to the camera. The camera's, the camera's a wing.
[22:09] Angie: Oh, yeah.
[22:10] Dave: I did.
[22:10] Kevin: Now y'all see the wing? Naked.
[22:17] Dave: Naked? Yeah, the only sauce for my children.
[22:20] Kevin: I, I, I, I would make them naked.
[22:23] Angie: I know. That was kind-
[22:24] Kevin: Eat one of those and tell me if you need a dipping sauce, 'cause, like, when you get a good steak, you never ask anyone for sauce.
[22:30] Dave: No. The chef would be offended. You don't-
[22:32] Kevin: Eat one of these, tell me you need a dipping sauce.
[22:34] Angie: Mm. by the way, I like A1.
[22:38] Kevin: Mm-mm.
[22:38] Angie: Oh, yeah.
[22:39] Dave: Put that on leftover steak.
[22:40] Angie: I do.
[22:40] Dave: Not steak off the grill.
[22:42] Angie: These are good.
[22:42] Kevin: Can't do that. You can't do that. Oh, these are really good.
[22:46] Angie: These are really good.
[22:47] Kevin: Seasoned well by, by my friend.
[22:54] Dave: So this kinda just goes with our theme of tailgating, beer and wings, right?
[22:58] Angie: So, um, the one positive I wanted to say about tailgating, I mean, obviously it's gonna be fun. I don't mean, like, the one positive, but the thing that I did always like about going to an event that was, like, a drinking event, at least there was, like, an activity, so there's a real... Like, the football is the activity.
[23:18] Dave: You mean one hope?
[23:18] Angie: Yeah, but I mean, there's something that's, like, not just standing there drinking, you know? So even the tailgating, you know, is more about food for me right now. Um, people bring... I mean, some people plan and cook all week for those things.
[23:33] Dave: Yeah.
[23:34] Angie: And, you know, if you're nice and you just walk around, people will share their food.
[23:38] Dave: Good. They wanna hear you compliment them.
[23:42] Angie: All right. We ready for the next one?
[23:46] Dave: Yeah.
[23:47] Angie: What kind are you bringing this weekend?
[23:50] Dave: I still have-
[23:51] Angie: All of them?
[23:51] Dave: All, some, some of each.
[23:53] Angie: Okay.
[23:54] Dave: So we're gonna go Michelob Ultra Zero.
[23:57] Angie: Superior.
[23:58] Dave: Superior Alcohol-Free Brew.
[24:04] Angie: Kevin.
[24:07] Kevin: This is the weirdest drink of my life.
[24:10] Angie: Me too.
[24:11] Kevin: I'm just gonna put you over here. Oh.
[24:17] Dave: Uh-oh.
[24:18] Kevin: Uh-oh.
[24:19] Angie: You like it?
[24:19] Dave: Got a fan over there.
[24:20] Angie: All right.
[24:21] Kevin: It's fruity.
[24:22] Angie: Cheers. Michelob Ultra Zero.
[24:25] Kevin: Wow.
[24:26] Angie: That is sweet, isn't it?
[24:27] Dave: Yeah. I just got sweet too, and I never realized it until he said it.
[24:30] Angie: And it's 'cause maybe we drank it after that.
[24:32] Dave: Maybe. It's definitely a lot sweeter-
[24:34] Angie: I'm gonna have another one
[24:34] Dave: than the Heineken is.
[24:35] Kevin: Wow.
[24:37] Dave: See, Kevin likes the fruity one.
[24:39] Kevin: Yeah.
[24:43] Angie: I think it's good. Don't-
[24:44] Dave: You know what's funny? This tastes more like a gin and tonic than that fucking gin and tonic did.
[24:49] Angie: Ugh. I don't know if I told you guys, but I was so sick that whole night. It just might... I had a headache. I thought it was from all that stuff we drink.
[24:57] Dave: Yeah.
[24:57] Angie: all right.
[24:58] Dave: So I'm definitely getting fruit, but it might be because we just had the other one.
[25:00] Angie: It's definitely sweeter, and it's... I'm gonna give this one a, a four.
[25:06] Dave: Um-
[25:07] Angie: I, I actually, like... I could drink one of e- you know, I could drink a whole one. I don't think I'd have more than one.
[25:14] Dave: I think I'm probably gonna end up just going in, in a row. I'm gonna go five, four, I'll give this a three.
[25:20] Angie: Okay.
[25:20] Dave: So far.
[25:21] Angie: So you're, you're sticking by Budweiser.
[25:24] Dave: Budweiser is still the leader in the clubhouse for me.
[25:27] Angie: Okay. For me, my, mine is still Heineken out of- What's your favorite of the three, Kevin?
[25:33] Kevin: This one.
[25:34] Angie: Oh, so we all picked a different one.
[25:35] Dave: He's got his in order. So the Ultra will be closest to him, that's his favorite. Then the-
[25:40] Kevin: Right now
[25:40] Dave: Heineken, then the Budweiser.
[25:41] Angie: This is real life. I just burped on the podcast with beer.
[25:43] Kevin: Oh, man.
[25:44] Dave: It happens.
[25:47] Angie: All right, so we're going into the last
[25:50] Dave: Coors. And I've actually never had this.
[25:51] Angie: Okay.
[25:52] Dave: I've had the, So Coors makes one with-
[25:58] Angie: Cold as the Rockies
[25:59] Dave: Coors makes one with a, yellow or tan label. It's called Coors Edge.
[26:04] Angie: Uh-huh.
[26:05] Dave: And I think that is supposed to represent, like, Coors' like, original Coors beer. Um, I don't know how else to explain it.
[26:13] Angie: Oh, I know what you mean.
[26:14] Dave: Not Coors Light, but the-
[26:14] Angie: That beige-yellow
[26:15] Dave: the beige-yellow with the blue.
[26:16] Angie: I know what it is.
[26:16] Dave: That's like a-
[26:17] Angie: Yeah, the old one
[26:17] Dave: at Coors.
[26:18] Angie: Yeah, yeah.
[26:19] Dave: And so their Coors Edge is a bottle with the same type logo. I've never... I've had that. I've never had this Coors. This is just Coors Zero Zero.
[26:27] Angie: Okay. House one to Kev. All right.
[26:34] Kevin: Thank you.
[26:35] Angie: Our fourth and last one.
[26:37] Kevin: I'm drunk.
[26:39] Angie: Cheers.
[26:39] Dave: Cheers.
[26:41] Angie: Coors Zero. That kind of tastes like the Heineken a little to me. I don't know. I think I'm just...
[26:54] Dave: It's pretty good.
[26:55] Angie: You like that one? It tastes like a real beer.
[27:01] Kevin: It does.
[27:04] Angie: See?
[27:04] Dave: Jesus.
[27:04] Angie: See?
[27:04] Kevin: Dang.
[27:06] Dave: Um, yeah. Uh, it's weird.
[27:14] Angie: Okay. This is my... My favorites are these so far. Not so far, we're done, but those are mine. What?
[27:27] Dave: I don't know. I'm on the fence. I don't know if the Heineken's my second favorite or the Coors is my second favorite. Can I do a tie?
[27:34] Angie: Yeah.
[27:35] Dave: I'll do Budweiser Zero first, Heineken and Coors second, Ultra last.
[27:43] Angie: There's mine. Okay?
[27:45] Dave: Yeah. Works for me. Kev?
[27:49] Kevin: Uh, what, for me it's, uh-
[27:51] Dave: Still the Ultra first?
[27:54] Kevin: Oh, yeah. That's-
[27:55] Dave: Ultra, Heineken, Coors, Bud.
[27:57] Kevin: Yeah.
[27:58] Dave: Okay.
[27:58] Kevin: Yeah.
[27:59] Angie: All right. We're gonna-
[28:00] Dave: Easy peasy
[28:00] Angie: we're gonna wrap the mocktail segment.
[28:02] Dave: That's it.
[28:04] Angie: Tell us which one you guys like.
[28:13] Dave: Okay, so we concluded our mocktails. We're both gonna keep our favorite beverages here with us if we feel like sipping. so we also, we mentioned last week we were gonna have another, uh, new segment. So- I didn't really understand it when, uh, Angie pitched it the first time. Now I get it. It's, it's called Catch of the Day. And it's called Catch of the Day because it, it's, it's supposed to be in a fishbowl.
[28:40] Angie: Well, what happened to the fish-
[28:40] Dave: Like a fish, you catch a fish. But Angie broke one.
[28:44] Angie: So I did order one.
[28:46] Dave: Got another one, forgot it, to, to bring it tonight. So we're just gonna use our VDTPT cups, pretend this is a fishbowl. And, um, so we're gonna do Catch of the Day. That's our segment, and we're gonna draw one question out of here that,
[29:01] Angie: We don't know. Any of them
[29:02] Dave: someone submitted-
[29:03] Angie: Yeah
[29:03] Dave: um, sent, sent it to Kevin. If you want to submit a question for us, it'll go in the, Catch of the Day cup or fishbowl. Um-
[29:10] Angie: Fishbowl. Nice
[29:11] Dave: send it to, uh, info@therecordingpod.com.
[29:14] Angie: Yep. Yep.
[29:15] Dave: That's right. Info@therecordingpod.com. You send them there, and, uh, the producers will make sure it goes in this cup, and maybe we'll pick yours. And also, you can send anything to that address, by the way, whatever you want.
[29:25] Angie: Money.
[29:26] Dave: Comments, questions. not money.
[29:28] Angie: Venmo.
[29:30] Dave: So you wanna pick?
[29:31] Angie: Sure. And so we're gonna pick one, and then we're both gonna answer.
[29:35] Dave: Yeah. We have no idea what these questions are. We don't know who submitted them.
[29:39] Angie: I guess we should actually... There was one rule, like you are allowed like one veto.
[29:43] Dave: You get one i- if it's something you absolutely-
[29:45] Angie: If it's something, like-
[29:46] Dave: don't wanna answer
[29:46] Angie: you really don't wanna answer.
[29:47] Dave: Right. So.
[29:49] Angie: All right. Ready?
[29:51] Dave: Ready.
[29:51] Angie: Are you gonna answer first or me?
[29:53] Dave: I, I, we didn't get that far. Make it a good one.
[29:58] Angie: Okay. Okay. All right. Got one. Oh. I'm like, "Oh." So this is a really good question.
[30:16] Dave: What?
[30:20] Angie: "Is there anything that a friend or relative could've said to you that would've helped you when you were at your lowest?" So I can answer that, or you can answer first.
[30:33] Dave: Uh...
[30:36] Angie: It's such a hard one because when you're going through something like that, it's, it's... There's not really probably anything that anyone could've said. I don't know.
[30:50] Dave: I don't know that there's anything anyone could've said, that would've stopped me, because I feel like s- some people did try. Um, but so f- for me, it was more... I don't know how I wanna say this. threats. You better stop, or, or you need to stop, or you're gonna, um, you know, like just off the top of my head, lose your job.
[31:18] Angie: Yeah.
[31:18] Dave: You're not gonna have a job if you keep drinking.
[31:20] Angie: Right.
[31:21] Dave: Which is 100% true.
[31:22] Angie: Right.
[31:22] Dave: No doubt about that. and so after our first episode, the very first episode came out, um, I got a call from my brother.
[31:34] Angie: Mm-hmm.
[31:36] Dave: And he, um, he had said, he said, you know, he said, "I just wanted to call you," and he apologized. He said, "I'm sorry that I didn't, uh, say anything or that I wasn't there for you or," you know, whatever. He just, he, I think, genuinely felt bad, 'cause I think he had an idea of where I was. No one knew how far in, how far gone I was.
[32:00] Angie: He just... You guys never talked about it?
[32:02] Dave: Never talked about it.
[32:03] Angie: Okay.
[32:03] Dave: But I mean-
[32:04] Angie: It... He knew
[32:04] Dave: he knows I was getting hammered.
[32:05] Angie: He knew. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[32:06] Dave: Um, I mean, everybody did. Um, but I could sense a genuine, um, happiness for me, um, that I had straightened it out. Um, and I felt his, like genuine remorse in that he was sorry that he didn't say anything. And my first thing that I said to him was, "Joey, it, it doesn't matter what you would've said. You, you could've said anything you wanted. I appreciate that. Thank you. Um, but no, there's nothing you could've said that, that would've stopped me."
[32:43] Angie: That's what I tried to explain to people, 'cause-
[32:45] Dave: Yeah. And I know people, like, feel bad, or they, they, because they probably knew, but they didn't wanna say anything 'cause then-
[32:51] Angie: I think they also, like-
[32:52] Dave: will that make you drink more?
[32:52] Angie: I don't know. Like, they don't know what to say either. What are they gonna say to you? "Oh, I heard you quit drinking. Good."
[32:58] Dave: Yeah.
[32:58] Angie: "Probably a good, good idea."
[33:00] Dave: Yeah. So I mean, at the time, yeah, I mean, what do you, what do you say? Um, 'cause no one knew anything. No one knew about all my health problems that came from drinking. No one knew I had heard the word liver transplant.
[33:13] Angie: Okay, but-
[33:13] Dave: No one knew that stuff
[33:14] Angie: but so just you saying that, like I did know that that was... I didn't know the details, but I knew it.
[33:20] Dave: You knew where it was heading.
[33:22] Angie: I kinda kn- yeah, but I remember you were in the hospital, and I knew that. Like to me, I was, like connecting it to drinking. I don't even know if that... I just, I felt like you were getting-
[33:33] Dave: Mm-hmm
[33:33] Angie: sick. Sick. Sicker.
[33:35] Dave: Absolutely. Yeah.
[33:35] Angie: Yeah. So.
[33:37] Dave: Um, yeah. So no one knew that, um, the, to the extent. Uh, there's no way they could've, right? That's not any fault of, of, anyone's besides mine, 'cause that's how I wanted it. Um, but yeah, I don't... There's nothing that could've been said. I mean, other than... See, when people tell you not to do something, y- like the old adage is-
[33:58] Angie: You do it
[33:58] Dave: you just wanna do it more.
[33:59] Angie: Yeah.
[33:59] Dave: Right? Like, if someone, like would've physically grabbed me and taken me to a rehab place, it just, it wouldn't have worked.
[34:07] Angie: Right.
[34:08] Dave: It, it, it would not have worked. It would've backfired.
[34:10] Angie: Yeah.
[34:11] Dave: Um, so I mean, that's why, like not to get too deep in it, but y- you know, you have to make the decision for yourself. It has to come from you. You have to want it for the right reasons.
[34:18] Angie: That's what I was gonna say.
[34:20] Dave: Don't do it to appease others. You have to do it for yourself.
[34:23] Angie: People want to think that they could say something to help you, but the sad part... And not sad, it just, it's only yourself. I'm the only one that can fix it. You're the only one that can fix it. And it's-
[34:34] Dave: You couldn't-
[34:34] Angie: so hard for people around you because, one, they're scared.
[34:38] Dave: Mm-hmm.
[34:39] Angie: Two, they don't know what to do.
[34:41] Dave: Yeah.
[34:42] Angie: Um, three, you know, they're watching someone that they love-
[34:46] Dave: Yeah
[34:46] Angie: go through something pretty awful.
[34:47] Dave: And no one wants to be judgemental. They don't-
[34:49] Angie: No
[34:49] Dave: wanna come off as being judgemental or judging you. Um, and, and then maybe genuinely, they, they don't know what to say, and that's fine, too. Uh, I don't know that I would... I, I mean, I would know what to say now, but- I, I don't... You could come up with 100 things to say, and I don't think one of them would've hit, um, for me, uh, um, until I was ready.
[35:11] Angie: I think that's just, I mean, at the end of the day, there wasn't really anything that anyone could have said to me. Um, I mean, I, I guess the only except I would say is, like, conversations around the girls.
[35:27] Dave: Mm-hmm.
[35:27] Angie: Those would get to me. Uh, those would... I would hear those more. I don't know.
[35:35] Dave: Yeah, and that was always the first thing that I thought of whenever, um, whenever you were, you were doing that, doing that stuff or, um, drinking a lot was, that was always the first thing that came to my mind, I think came to everybody's mind, was you're just gonna lose the girls. You're just gonna lose the girls. Um, and that's why, like I was saying before, they're like, "Why don't you just quit? What a moron. Just quit. Just stop."
[35:57] Angie: I know.
[35:57] Dave: Yeah, right. Doesn't work like that.
[36:00] Angie: I mean, 'cause that's the other thing. Like, as much as people wanna try and understand it, like, it's just impossible to know. Like, it's impossible, unless you've gone through it, it's impossible to even rationalize or even understand it.
[36:16] Dave: Yeah, and I, uh, uh, I'm just thinking about it now. I don't know anyone who has been through it except for you. Like, I don't know, and it doesn't mean it hasn't happened, but, like, I don't know that my brother or my sister or, or my parents or anyone has ever had to deal with or see someone do that to themselves like I was doing. Uh, and I... Maybe that's not the case, but, I mean, how... Like, if you've never experienced it before, I can only imagine it's that much harder to, to try to come up with something to say or do. Like, because we've been through it-
[36:55] Angie: Yeah
[36:56] Dave: I feel like I might not know the right thing to say or do, but I, I could probably soften the blow a little bit-
[37:02] Angie: Yeah
[37:02] Dave: um, just from experience, right?
[37:03] Angie: Yeah.
[37:04] Dave: Um, I think if you don't have that or you haven't experienced it or that hasn't been in your, in your world before, I just think, you know, there, there's nothing. There's nothing you can do. And that's the simple answer for me. No.
[37:16] Angie: Yeah, and I'm gonna, I'm gonna agree with that. at the end of the day, I've... I really wish it had, you know, made me make some changes earlier.
[37:25] Dave: Yeah, because listen, if the threat of losing the girls, if the threat of me losing my job, if the threat of me losing my wife, if that didn't make me stop, like, what is someone gonna say?
[37:37] Angie: Well, that's what-
[37:38] Dave: What else is g- I mean, that's-
[37:40] Angie: Same for me.
[37:40] Dave: Yeah. I mean, that's, that's... If anything was gonna, it would've been one of those things, but even that couldn't do it. That's how powerful this stuff is.
[37:50] Angie: I don't wanna, like, be a, a weirdo, but I do think one thing that helped me when I was dealing with Mike a lot, like his addiction, um, I did actually go to Al-Anon, and I'm... just recommend that as, like, an option for people if you feel really lost and what are you supposed to do? You're really not supposed to-
[38:09] Dave: That is, that's where-
[38:10] Angie: do anything
[38:11] Dave: 'cause I'm not spun up on that by any means, but that's where if someone in your family and it's affecting you, you're not the person-
[38:17] Angie: So do you remember when I met Daryl Strawberry and he was in rehab with Mike?
[38:23] Dave: I remember when Daryl Strawberry-
[38:24] Angie: And he got a bus-
[38:25] Dave: was in rehab with Mike. I didn't know or I don't know the story of him meeting him.
[38:28] Angie: His wife took me to my first Al-Anon meeting.
[38:31] Dave: Okay. I do remember when... 'Cause I love Daryl Strawberry, and I remember when Mike was, had him as a roommate or whatever.
[38:36] Angie: He was a mess.
[38:38] Dave: Yeah.
[38:39] Angie: But, um, I don't even know why I was thinking about that.
[38:43] Dave: Go to Al-Anon.
[38:44] Angie: Oh, yeah.
[38:44] Dave: Talk to people at Al-Anon.
[38:45] Angie: Yeah. So that's kinda... But it was the first time when I went to Al-Anon that somebody explained to me, like, I think they call it, like, I don't know if I remember it, like, the three Cs. Like, you didn't cause it, you can't cure it, and there's another one I'm forgetting. but literally, like, there's nothing that, that you can do to help that person other than just maybe give them the, the grace to figure it out.
[39:11] Dave: Yeah
[39:11] Angie: which is not really easy to do when someone's ruining their life.
[39:14] Dave: No. Um, yeah, I don't, If, yeah, like, if someone... I- if, if the threat of losing your job or your wife or even your vehicles or your house or, like, i- if, if none of that is gonna do it, then nothing will.
[39:37] Angie: But that's kind of the scary part about alcoholics, is they lose everything before they sometimes figure it out.
[39:44] Dave: Yeah.
[39:47] Angie: And I think that's the thing. Like, if I had kept drinking, I would've lost everything. Yes, the girls, house, job, family. I wouldn't be surrounded by loving... I mean, it, it's hard to love an alcoholic that's drinking and getting wasted and hurting themselves and doing that.
[40:09] Dave: Well, I love you.
[40:10] Angie: I love you, too.
